Who Wants to Make a DIY Rope Mirror?

Materials you will need:

• A large piece of MDF / a particleboard or a plywood
• Jute Rope
• Hot Glue Sticks
• Mirror
• Mirror and Wood Adhesive
• Sturdy Hanging Hooks
• A Long Skinny Wood Strip
• A Few Short Screws
• Pencil
• Hot Glue Gun
• Drill
• Drill Bits and Driver Bit
• Jig Saw
• Tape Measure
• Glass Cutter (optional)

Instructions on how to make the DIY Rope Mirror:

Step 1: You can start with the mirror. If you have a 12 8 12 mirror tile, it’s good. Otherwise, if like me, you are using a wonky-shaped mirror, then don’t forget that you have to carefully remove the frame and as much backing as you can.

Step 2: Next, with the help of the glass cutter, cut the glass carefully and then set the mirror aside.

Step 3: Now, take your long skinny piece of wood, make a mark in the end, and drill a hole in it. Once you have marked 12 inches from that spot, make a second hole. Now, from the first hole, measure in 5.5 inches and then prepare yourself to drill the third hole.

Step 4: You can use the first hole to drill it directly to the center of the particleboard, and then you can use the other holes to go all the way around and make two circles, that is one on the inner side and the other on the outer side.

Step 5: Now, just inside the inner circle, you can use a drill bit that is a bit bigger than your jigsaw blade and drill a hole to allow access to the inner circle. Then, using your jigsaw, cut both the inner and outer rings. And, please, if you have never used a jigsaw before, ask the help of someone. And once this step is done, you will have a huge wooden donut.

Step 6: As some particleboards can be some usual nasty and splintery stuff, I recommend you to sand the edges properly.

Step 7: Now, it’s time to work on the mirror. Flip the mirror upside down and keeping an eye on the front side, center it up where you want it to be. Taking a pencil, mark all the way around the mirror so you know exactly where the adhesive will go.

Step 8: Once you have made a pretty thick line of mirror adhesive all the way around the inner circle, put the mirror on and leave it to dry.

Step 9: Once it’s all dry and you are ready to go, begin by snipping the end of the jute rope at a slight angle. After running a bead of hot glue down on the glass, start by putting the angle side up and make it all the way around the circumference of the mirror.

Step 10: Once you get to the starting point, go right up on top and do one more round on the inside of the rim and for the following row, go onto the flat part and keep spiraling round and round. The combination should be glue and rope…glue and rope…glue and rope. Hold the sections for a few seconds in order to keep them in place and for the glue to dry.

Step 11: Once you get to the end of the first roll of rope, I suggest leaving at least 6 inches unglued and then cut the end off. Now, cut the starting end of the new set at an angle that will be facing upwards.

Step 12: Dry fit the seam and stick the tail of the new rope with glue and then attach the last few inches of the piece. You can also put just a little bit of glue right on the seam to make it smooth.

Step 13: After continuing the rope to the edge of the board and finishing it off, put some heavy-duty hangers on the back to keep it secure while you are hanging the mirror. And, let me add that if you want it to be more secure, you can use tiny screws or just some mirror clips. And there, your rope mirror is done!
